1990 Porsche 911 (964) Ruf
This is a great example of what can happen when a really passionate owner commits to making the best car of its breed. And everyone knows with Singer and the other restomod companies doing their thing, that great examples of manual rear-wheel drive cars are becoming more and more sought-after. Beneath the Amazon Green paintwork the running gear of this car has everyone standing in awe, including Mick and his team at Corse who built the engine and mechanicals.
The brief for the interior was to treat the car today as modern-day Ruf would, with its famous artisanal approach. Back in the early 90s when 964s were delivered, Ruf interiors were approached more like a modified car as opposed to having the full, bespoke manufacturer approach.
A specific example of this can be found in the armrests integrated into the doorcards, which are a bespoke ProStitch creation. We didn’t want to pursue the uber-minimalist RS doorcard (which in every day practice is not particularly usable) so instead we created a custom armrest which incorporates the door strap pull. The doorcard features the signature diagonal stitching detail, but unlike doorcard we’ve seen from other trimmers, we avoid running this diagonal detailing to the bottom of the panel as it seems visually unresolved. So instead, we integrated the design with the armrest which results in what we think is more complete, useable doorcard, that still looks like it came from Stuttgart.
It’s hard to notice a CAE shifter in any car, but making it integrate properly into the centre console requires a great deal of attention. We shortened the length of the hand brake and the tray insert, then wrapped in black Nappa leather, to balance out the shifter installation.
The rear seat delete is also a bespoke item, modified to clean up the lines and panels. The rear shelf and quarter trim has been raised so it sits on one uninterrupted level, and wrapped in matching German squareweave carpet. We know most people won’t notice these things on first glance, but once you see it, it’s greatly appreciated.
Even the front trunk carpet doesn’t have the usual 964 carpet sag. A build like this deserves better, so we backed the carpet with moulded foam to give it structure and delete the unsightly droop.
We could go on for ever with this car, but you’ll sense how invested we are in it’s creation. But it’s not quite perfect - the Pole Position seats were purchased brand new by the customer from Recaro, and therefore haven’t been retrimmed. We did however, strip and paint the back of the seat shells.
And if you peek under the front passenger seat, you’ll see we’ve fitted a slimline Fire Stryker extinguisher with a custom leather sleeve (which we now sell as a package from our online shop).
